How to Pray-The Do’s & Don’ts of Prayer

Knowing God’s Will

To know the true, living, and active Will of God, we should look to His Word.  We should not consult our own hearts, minds, emotions, intellects, desires, motives, and religious sayings or catchphrases.

“Then one of the crowd answered and said, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit. And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not.” He answered him and said, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me.” Then they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth. So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes. Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it: “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!” Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” (Mark 9:17-29 NKJV)

In the book “The Gifts of The Spirit,” Derek Prince states, “We should note several important truths revealed in this passage.  First Jesus did not tell man, “This is too hard,” or “This condition is the will of God for your Son”.  Instead he said, “Bring him to me”.  That was Jesus’ attitude about every single case of sickness.  For example, when the centurion said “I have a sick servant at home,” Jesus said, “I’ll come and heal him.”  (Matthew 8:5-13; Luke 7:2-10).  There never was a question about the will of Jesus to heal and deliver, and we must understand His willingness to heal and deliver today.”

His Word is His Will.

Salvation Prayer

It is important to make sure that you and the people around you are saved and that they freely and earnestly CHOOSE for Jesus Christ to come into their hearts today.  Here is a prayer to be recited only AFTER you or the person(s) involved have decided that they are ready to make the decision to make a commitment to be in covenant with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Many churches intimidate people into receiving salvation through fear-that is a form of witchcraft.  However, Jesus wants us to choose Him in love.  “We love Him because he first loved us.”  (1 John 4:19)  Make sure that you have accepted His love for you before becoming apart of the Bride of Christ, which is His church.

Salvation Prayer:

Lord Jesus, I ask You to forgive me of my sins and cleanse me of those things that have kept me in bondage.  I surrender to You today.  I ask You to come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior.  I believe that You are the Son of God and that You were raised from the dead.  Thank You for giving me new life as a child of God.

In Jesus Name, Amen.

Corporate Warfare Prayer

For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20 NKJV)

It is important to have a corporate Warfare prayer against the attacks of the enemy that can be recited in the corporate service under a corporate anointing.   This prayer  should contain decrees directly based on the Word of God.  The more we recite this prayer the more we will internalize it.

Church Declaration

The church should also have a declaration that is read every time the body meets where more than two or three or gathered.  Auxiliary Meetings, Bible Study, Sunday School, and Prayer Meeting are examples of gatherings where the declaration can be recited before, during, or after a meeting adjourns. This declaration should contain decrees directly based on the Word of God.

Prayer Integrity

Pray God’s Will ONLY.  Do not pray your own personal will for a person, nor what you desire for their lives.  Only pray according to the Word of God concerning people and situations.  As you grow in intimacy with God, you will be able to discern what His specific Will is for a person or situation. However it will always agree with His Word.

Know Your Spiritual Jurisdiction. Not everyone has the same amount of influence in the heavenlies.  Your lifestyle, your walk with God, your faith, your spiritual covering, your submission, and the fruit of the Spirit in your life determines how much power you have in the spirit realm.  It is not wise to rebuke, come against principalities, or certain demons if you are not completely delivered from what you are attempting to cast out, or if you are unsure of where you stand in the heavenlies.  In Intercessory Prayer, the Lord will lead you to pray for certain things, people, and situations.  If you are unsure, wait for His prompting.  Do not confuse Intercessory Prayer with your personal prayer time.  Intercessory prayer is God’s prompting for you to immediately pray for what He puts in your Spirit to pray about.  Your personal prayer time is when you regularly communicate with God.

Stay Objective.  We are simply an extension of God’s love, grace, and mercy here on earth.  We are not God.  It is not our purpose to become personally involved in the personal and spiritual affairs of others outside of God’s prompting. God is still a Sovereign entity and He doesn’t need our help to do that which He can only do.  We are His agents, but we do not run His headquarters.

Know Your Battle & Your Battlefield. It is important to know what you are fighting, where you are fighting, why you are fighting, and how to fight it.  It is also important to know what weapons or warfare techniques to use when engaging against the enemy during a trial in your life.  You will need a Word of Knowledge & a Word of Wisdom concerning how to approach your trial, situation, or dilemma.  Be open to and anticipate hearing from God, and be willing to be obedient to His instructions.

Learn to Rest. No one should be fighting all the time.  We were not built to stay in constant battle against the enemy.  There are seasons and times of rest.  Consider the fact that your physical body will die without proper nutrition and rest.  Your Spirit man can also  weaken without spiritual food, rest, and restoration by resting in God.

Covering Our Leaders

In our local church there are offices and positions that are more likely to be attacked on a consistent basis.  The Pastor and their Spouse, The House Prophet, The Intercessory Prayer Team, The Praise Team/Choir, The Clergy and the Youth Department.  The devil attacks the HEAD.  The Senior Leader is over the entire congregation and requires consistent prayer, however the Pastor’s spouse also needs to have consistent prayer as they are the helper to the Senior Leader and often deal with the same burdens as the Senior Leader spiritually. The devil wants to disrupt and frustrate the direction and discernment of the move of God,  so he also attacks the prophetic leadership.  He definitely doesn’t want anyone standing in the gap against his schemes so he despises Intercessors and seeks to distract them from praying.  He was the head minstrel of heaven before his exile and often attacks the Praise and Worship Team or Choir with contention, pride, and haughty self-seeking ambitions. He wants the Clergy to lose credibility so he sends the spirit of Jezebel against them to tempt them into immorality.  He wants to kill the legacy of the church, so he also attacks the youth leaders and youth ministry.

It is extremely important to have regular prayer for these offices and positions.  In order to proactively maintain deliverance, credibility, and influence.

This does not mean that the devil doesn’t attack other offices and positions within the church, it just means that the positions mentioned above tend to need extra care.

Power of the Human Will

“There is a fine line between God’s Sovereignty and the Human Will.Pastor Tracy Troy, Victory in Jesus Ministries, Inc.

The Human Will is our ability to choose our responses to the choices God has given us.  The Human Will is created to be impenetrable and God does not even disrupt the Human Will, as any force against one’s will is a form of witchcraft.  There are cases where people do not receive the Will of God for their lives because either they reject it or do not come into agreement with it in their hearts, or they may make another choice contrary to what God would desire for a situation.  There is a fine line between God’s Sovereignty and the Human Will.  For example, you are interceding for a relative who is in Intensive Care at the hospital.  You have been interceding for them, but you receive the news that they have died (or transitioned).  You are tempted to become discouraged in the power of prayer and therefore become more lackadaisical in praying due to disappointment.  We know from His Word that it is God’s Will for us to live a long life and that healing is the children’s bread.  However, it is important to remember that  if a person’s heart is not in agreement with the Word, then they are NOT in agreement with God.  So they couldn’t receive healing.  Also, there is the possibility that a person may have desired to transition into the afterlife, and did not desire healing.  Therefore, they received what they Willed.
